Light Up a Life with Phyllis Tuckwell

Local Hospice Care charity Phyllis Tuckwell is inviting anyone who would like to remember a loved one, to come along to its Light up a Life service, which will take place outside Guildford Cathedral on Sunday 8th December, at 7.45pm.

Phyllis Tuckwell holds its Light up a Life service every year in the lead up to Christmas, to remember loved ones who have died, and offer comfort and support to their relatives and friends at this special time. The service will include readings and carols, and the image of a Christmas tree will be projected onto the front of the Cathedral building. During the service, the lights on the tree will be ‘switched on’, in memory of those who have died. The service will be live streamed and recorded, so if you cannot attend on the night, you can watch it at www.pth.org.uk/lual2024

If you would like to, you can make a dedication in memory of your loved one. Your dedication will be projected onto the front of the Cathedral after the service, until 10pm that evening. It will also appear in the Light up a Life Order of Service, which will be given out that evening and published on Phyllis Tuckwell's website, where it can be downloaded. All dedications must be made by Friday 22nd November in order to be included in the Order of Service and Cathedral projection. The service and dedications are open to everyone, whether your loved one was cared for by Phyllis Tuckwell or not. To make a dedication, please visit www.pth.org.uk/lual2024

By making a dedication, you will help fund Phyllis Tuckwell’s vital services, ensuring that it can continue to care for local patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer. Every day it supports over 250 patients, relatives and carers, through medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support, but as the NHS/Government only covers 25% of its costs, it has to raise over £25,000 a day to do this.

“Christmas is a time for celebration, but it can be difficult for those who are missing a loved one,” said Maria Abellan, patient, family & carer support team manager at Phyllis Tuckwell. “Our annual Light up a Life celebration provides an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of those who are sadly no longer with us, and we hope you will join us on this special evening.”

Phyllis Tuckwell would like to thank Right at Home and Beard Construction for sponsoring Light up a Life this year, and is grateful to Guildford Cathedral for hosting the event. As the service will be held outside, please do wrap up warmly and bring a torch.

About Phyllis Tuckwell

Phyllis Tuckwell provides palliative and end of life care for adult patients and families living with an advanced or terminal illness (such as cancer, heart, lung or neurological disease) in West Surrey and North-East Hampshire, an area of 550,000 residents.

Every day we support over 250 patients, relatives and carers, through a mix of medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support. We are currently building a new state-of-the-art Hospice on our existing site in Farnham, which will enable us to care for more people who need our support. During the project, we are continuing to offer our specialist services, from alternative locations. Our In-Patient Unit is temporarily located in a care home in Camberley; our community support is being delivered by our Hospice at Home team for patients, families and carers at home; and our Living Well sessions and outpatient appointments will continue to run at the Beacon Centre in Guildford. Our support staff are located at a temporary office facility in Farnham for the duration of the build.

The NHS/Government only cover 25% of our costs, so we have to raise over £25,000 every single day to be able to offer all our services, free of charge, to our patients and their families and carers. We therefore rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community.
