Our Services
Some of the terms we use to describe services can seem a little baffling. Below you can find descriptions of the different types of service we regularly hold in the Cathedral. If there is something you don't understand, please get in touch and we will add it to the list below.
Services on Sundays
Holy Communion (BCP): This service uses the Book of Common Prayer and the traditional language (e. 'thee' and 'thou'). The service at 8am on Sunday mornings is quiet and reflective and lasts about 35 minutes. Brief sermons are sometimes given.
Cathedral Eucharist: This is the principal service of the Cathedral week. We use Common Worship with contemporary language, except on the first Sunday of the month when we use the Book of Common Prayer with traditional language.
Choral Mattins: This service is from the Book of Common Prayer. It has hymns and other music sung by the choir. Except in August there is a short sermon during the service.
Choral Evensong: This service is from the Book of Common Prayer. On Sundays it includes congregational hymns and a sermon. On weekdays there are neither hymns nor a sermon.
Services on Weekdays (Monday to Saturday)
Morning Prayer : A short service of psalms, Bible reading and prayers, using Common Worship.
Eucharist (Holy Communion): This service lasts about 30 minutes and directly follows Morning Prayer. We use Common Worship.
Evensong or Evening Prayer: During term time this service is from the Book of Common Prayer. It is usually a choral service on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday and Saturday it is usually a said service. Variations can be found in the News Sheet and service listings.
