The Snowman™
Since its release in 1982, The Snowman has become a much-loved Christmas classic. It’s story of a Snowman who takes a boy on a magical flight to meet Santa Claus, is charming and poignant, and is told without dialogue – through animation and music alone.
The film is based on a children’s book by Raymond Briggs, with the soft and warmly atmospheric animation style derived from the charm of his illustrations. Briggs’ idea was to gently introduce children to mortality, as the Snowman is shown to have melted away at the very end.
The score for The Snowman was composed by Howard Blake, and during his long career it has become his most famous work, particularly his song for child soprano, Walking in The Air.
The Snowman and the Snowdog
The Snowman and The Snowdog is the sequel to the story of The Snowman. It aired on Channel 4 on Christmas Eve 2012 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Snowman and of Channel 4.
Bringing some extra fun and mischief to the original story, The Snowdog appeals to a contemporary audience and provides a new way for the whole family to come together each year and re-live the magic.
When a young boy and his mother move house, the boy discovers a secret box hidden under the floorboards of his bedroom. In it are a hat, scarf, some lumps of coal and a shrivelled tangerine: a snowman-making kit!
Later that day it snows, and the boy builds a Snowman and, to keep it company, a Snowdog. During the night they both come to life, and the three embark on magical adventures.
