News: Cathedral Stewards celebrate 50 years

The 50^th anniversary of the founding of the Guild of Stewards of Guildford Cathedral was celebrated on Sunday 13 May 2012 with past and present members of the Guild attending the morning service at the Cathedral. This was followed by a lunch in the Cathedral Refectory.

The Cathedral itself was consecrated in May 1961 and celebrated its 50^th anniversary last year. The Guild was formed in 1962 by the first Dean of Guildford, Bishop George Clarkson, to assist with the organisation of Sunday services as well as many of the special events during the week. Since then, the Guild has given continuous service to the Cathedral. Currently, the Guild has 72 members, two of whom, Les Harfield and David Woolsey, were amongst the original members who were admitted at the beginning in 1962.

To mark the 50^th anniversary, members of the Guild have given the Cathedral a silver ciborium. This is a covered vessel to hold the wafers for distribution during a communion service and it matches a similarly designed chalice already in use in the Cathedral.
